Upcoming presentations

The Legal Genealogist has traveling shoes on, bags packed and webinar log-in information in hand as the spring season sprints into high gear. RootsTech kicks things off for this year-in person, but there’s more… so much more… coming up.

And, as before, I want to invite you to come along, to the extent possible, on the trip…

Here’s an overview of what’s coming up in March, and we’ll go ahead and take a peek at April — starting off with one of the year’s biggest events: RootsTech 2023.

Thursday, 2 March, through Saturday, 4 March, in Salt Lake City: RootsTech 2023 is back in person at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, and I’ll be presenting four lectures: The Road to Decision: Family History in Federal Court Records (Thursday, 9:30 a.m. MST); Landing the Fourths: Proving a Case with Court, Land, and DNA Evidence (Thursday, 3:00 p.m. MST); Linking Generations: Using Court and Land Records (Friday, 1:30 p.m. MST); and Follow the Money! Saturday, 4 March, 10:00 a.m. CST: The Houston Genealogical Forum is hosting the presentation Copyrights and Copywrongs: The Law for Genealogists. To register and for more information about this hybrid in-person/virtual session (I’ll be virtual), see the event page.

Saturday, 18 March, starting at 10:00 a.m. EDT: The Fairfax (VA) Genealogical Society is holding its hybrid in-person/virtual Spring Fair at the Dunn Loring Fire Hall. The morning session is a workshop, When Worlds Collide: Resolving Conflicts in Genealogical Research, and the afternoon lecture is No, No, Nanette! What Negative Evidence Is…And Isn’t. Thursday, 23 March, 6:00 p.m. EDT: The Boston Public Library is hosting the presentation “Deemed a Runaway” — Black Laws of the North. For more information and to register, see the event page.

On Friday, 24 March, and Saturday, 25 February: The North Carolina Genealogical Society is holding a virtual conference with eight presenters focusing on a wide variety of ways to do good research in the Tarheel State. I’m honored to be included, presenting “No Person Shall … Gallop Horses In the Streets” – Using Court Records to tell the Story of our Ancestors’ Lives (Friday, 11:15 a.m. EDT). Tuesday, 4 April, 7 p.m. EDT: The Morris Area (NJ) Genealogy Society (MAGS) is hosting the virtual presentation “Don’t Forget the Ladies” – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law. For more information, see the meeting schedule page.

Thursday, 13 April, and Friday, 14 April: Legacy Family Tree Webinars is hosting its 4th annual 24-Hour Genealogy Webinar Marathon and my own new presentation, When Enough is Enough, will be one of the events at 9:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the 14th. Saturday, 15 April, starting at 8:30 a.m. PDT: The Olympia (WA) Genealogical Society is holding its all-virtual 2023 Spring Seminar at which I’ll be presenting four lectures: Where There Is – or Isn’t – a Will (9:00 a.m. PDT); Property Rights and Wrongs – African-Americans at the Courthouse (10:15 a.m. PDT); Linking the Generations with Court and Land Records (12 noon PDT); and “Don’t Forget the Ladies” – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law (1:15 p.m. PDT). Saturday, 22 April, starting at 10:00 a.m. CDT: The Dallas Genealogical Society is holding its 2023 Spring Seminar at the J. Eric Johnson Central Library. I’ll be presenting four lectures during the day: in the morning, Finding the Law and Making a Federal Case Out of It; and in the afternoon, From 1619 to Juneteenth – Slavery and the Law Before the Civil War and Dower and Dowry: Women, Property, & Legal Records. Saturday, 29 April, starting at 9:45 a.m. MDT: The Colorado Genealogical Society is holding its hybrid in-person/virtual seminar at the Englewood Civic Center, Hampden Hall. I’ll be presenting four lectures during the day: in the morning, Revelers, Hogkillers and Disobedient Children: Early State Laws and Advertising the Law: The Gems in the Legal Notices; and in the afternoon, “An Act for the Relief of Gregory Thomas and Others” – The Private Laws of the Federal and State Governments and Margaret’s Mother: Using DNA to Solve a Mystery. Come on out and join us, if you can, for one or more of these events and note, in some cases, that registration will be free or at a reduced cost to members of the host society — and some may well be limited to members only… There are some reaaaaaaally good reasons for joining genealogical societies… Just sayin’…
