Two new states this week!!
There isn’t anything The Legal Genealogist loves more than one-stop-shopping resources for early state laws.
And so there’s not much I’m more grateful for than a fellow genealogist who is collecting links to early state laws and making them readily available in a one-stop-shopping format.
With two more states just having gone live on the website this week.
Debbie Mieszala is a board-certified Illinois genealogist who started collecting these links on her website The Advancing Genealogist to advance and support her own research.
First came Illinois.1 Then New York.2
And then it snowballed… Kansas,3 and Indian Territory,4 and Wisconsin,5 and Montana.6
Then came Michigan,7 Minnesota,8 North Dakota,9 South Dakota and the Dakota Territory,10 Missouri,11 Indiana,12 the Northwest Territory,13 and Iowa14
And now, just this week, two more: Ohio15 and Nebraska.16
Sixteen states and/or territories in all.
If you’ve ever tried to find a statute from a particular historical time period for one of these places, you know how hard it can be.

Ohio Statehood, legally, had an interesting history. The petition was brought forward to Congress but never voted on (U.S. Congress, Statutes at Large, 07th Congress, Session 2, (1803), 225-227, chs. 7, 21, 40 [https://archive.org/details/usstat/002_statutes_at_large]; however in U.S. Congress, Statutes at Large, 83rd Congress (1952), 337: 407, a provision was made to make Ohio an equal footing with all the other States, but backdated 1 March 1803.
By technicality, Ohio was a territory until 1952 by virtue of Congress of voting the petition back in 1803.
