Upcoming presentations
Rabbit rabbit rabbit.
It’s the first of November. Yeah, really, already.
The clocks roll back tomorrow, everything everywhere is pumpkin spice, and … sigh … Christmas displays have been in stores for weeks already yet.
So… what’s up next? A lot! The first event, today’s virtual all-day Fall Seminar of the Tennessee Genealogical Society will undoubtedly be well underway or even in the rear view mirror by the time you read this! But there’s more coming up and, as always, The Legal Genealogist wants to invite you to come along, to the extent possible, on the trip.

November 2025
• As noted, today, Saturday, 1 November, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. CDT (9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. EDT): The Tennessee Genealogical Society is hosting its virtual all day Fall Seminar. I’m delighted to be doing some of my favorite presentations: Mr. Blackstone’s Common Law, NARA Mythbusters: Your Family IS in the Archives, Follow the Money! Records of the Record Makers, and Rogues, Rascals and Rapscallions: The Family Black Sheep. For more information and to register, see the Event page.
• Wednesday, 5 November, 2:00 p.m. EST: Legacy Family Tree Webinars is hosting the virtual presentation DNA Informed Consent: DNA’s Essential Ethical Underpinning. For more information and to register, see the webinar page.
• Thursday, 6 November, 7:00 p.m. CST (8:00 p.m. EST): The Naperville Public Library in Illinois is hosting the virtual presentation Share and Share Alike: The Rules of Genealogical Privacy. For more information and to register, see the library’s calendar page.
• Saturday, 8 November, 7:00 p.m. CST (8:00 p.m. EST): The BCG Education Fund is hosting its all-day 2025 Fall Virtual Putting Skills to Work workshop. Carolyn Ladd and I are co-presenting Paper Trails and Legal Tales: Analyzing History One Record at a Time and will guide folks through the skills of source citation, transcribing handwritten records, abstracting key details from those records, and analyzing the meaning of the records through the prism of the law with the aim of reconstructing a family’s history. For more information and to register, see the workshop page.
• Wednesday, 12 November, 7:00 p.m. MST (9:00 p.m. EST): The Pikes Peak Genealogical Society in Colorado Springs is hosting the virtual presentation Revelers, Hogkillers, and Disobedient Children: Early State Laws. For more information and to receive an invitation as a non-member, see the society’s Upcoming Programs page.
• Saturday, 15 November, 10:00 a.m. MST (noon EST): The Colorado Genealogical Society is hosting the virtual presentation From Sealed Records to Open Histories: Adoption Laws and Genealogy. For more information and to register, see the Event page.
December 2025
• Saturday, 13 December, 10:00 a.m. MST (noon EST): The Hudson County (NJ) Genealogical & Historical Society is hosting the virtual presentation DNA and the Hidden Half of the Family. For more information about this Members-Only event, keep an eye on the Upcoming Society Events page.
And of course as the year winds down, it’s time to look at registering for next year’s institute courses. At the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, in the virtual program January 26-30, I’m coordinating a new course Lives in Context, where my team of instructors will present a case study each day — together with the key tools, resources, concepts and methodologies that were needed to solve that particular family history mystery. Registration is open now. At the GRIP Genealogy Institute, I’ll be coordinating one of my favorite courses, Women and Children First!: Research Methods for the Hidden Half of the Family, in the virtual week (June 22-26) — and taking a class myself in the in-person week, July 12-17. Registration opens February 3. And at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research, I’ll be coordinating the always-challenging Advanced Methodology and Evidence Analysis course virtually July 27-31. Registration opens February 28.
Come on out and join us, if you can, for one or more of the upcoming events and note, in some cases, that registration will be free or at a reduced cost to members of the host society — and some are limited to members only… There are some reaaaaaaally good reasons for joining genealogical societies… Just sayin’…
