Eleven years and counting…
Eleven years ago today, on the first of January 2012, the very first post appeared here at The Legal Genealogist.
It explained that:
My purpose in writing The Legal Genealogist is, in part, to help folks understand the often arcane and even impenetrable legal concepts and terminology that are so very important to those of us studying family history. Without understanding the context in which events took place and records were created, we miss so much of both the significance and the flavor of what happened.1
It didn’t stop there. That first post went on to say:
But this blog won’t just be about the law. As the title goes, it’s “genealogy, the law, and so much more.” With your help, it ought to be a lot of fun to see just what “so much more” will be (and how much trouble we can get into finding out!).2
I hope you’re still having as much fun as I am — here at the start of a 12th year of this blog — in figuring out just what “so much more” will be (and how much more trouble we can get into this coming year…).
Happy New Year!!!

Thanks for all you do, Judy! Let’s get some more pictures of your cat in there though.
My cats are always on the desk when I am sitting there working so I’m sure your cat is “helping” with this column also!
Happy New Year!
Start this New Year off right by thanking you for all the pointers you have given to me and others thru your “Legal Genealogist” blog. Your hard work does not go unappreciated. May this be the year of “Health, Happiness and Peace in Abundance”. My hope is that you just keep on keeping on
Thanks, Stan. I’ll be in Texas this year — we have to get together!
I believe you are the most favorite Legal Genealogist around. My blog will also be celebrating its twelve year anniversary in April. With six children and now six grandchildren, our genealogy paths have taken very divergent paths. Then the process of aging and health issues added into the mix I am sure you continually marvel how things have evolved.
In any genealogy discussion I am a part of your name truly rises to the top. I enjoy your outstanding knowledge of the law and the down to earth explanations that you provide. You also seem to be at the top of the list for genealogy presenters,
One of my favorite memories of you was when you received an award at a SLiG dinner. Your joy in genealogy spreads like a warm blanket in and through the difficult challenges we often face.
If I could name a new award it would be to the person who spreads the most joy in doing genealogy the Judy G. Russell way. You share the love, joy, inclusion to everyone without any bias and we as a genealogy community are appreciative for the spirit of teaching others as we learn.
Thank you and have a wonderful New Year.
Thank you so much for the very kind words. Happy New Year to you and yours as well!
