Upcoming presentations

The Legal Genealogist has a busy schedule coming up.

Including — ta da!!! — the first in-person conference in a dog’s age.

And I absolutely want to invite you to come along, to the extent possible, on the trip…

Here’s an overview of what’s coming up in May, and we’ll go ahead and take a peek at June.

May 2022

• Wednesday, 11 May, 7 p.m. EDT: Allen County Genealogical Society of Indiana is hosting the virtual presentation “Don’t Forget the Ladies” – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law. Use this link for more information and to register.

• Saturday, 14 May, 10 a.m. PDT /1 p.m. EDT: Clallam County Genealogical Society (Port Angeles, Washington) is hosting the virtual presentation Dowered or Bound Out: Records of Widows and Orphans. See the events page for more information.

• Tuesday-Saturday, 24-29 May: The National Genealogical Society is hosting its first in-person national conference since 2019 at the Convention Center in Sacramento, California. With a strong virtual component, the conference — themed “Our American Mosaic” — offers something for everybody. I’ll be there with four presentations: (1) “Las Leyes de California: Spanish Colonial Laws and the Records They Produced” (also part of the At-Home stream on Saturday); (2) “Margaret’s Mother: Using DNA to Solve a Mystery;” (3) “What’s in a Name: Name Changes and the Law;” and (4) “Linking Generations: Using Court and Land Records.” Online registration closes before in-person does, so check out the conference website for full details.

June 2022

• Saturday, 4 June, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. EDT: The Genealogical Society of New Jersey is hosting its all-day virtual 2022 Spring Conference, Jerseyology: Research in the Garden State — eight presentations in two tracks, so something for everybody. My presentation New Jersey’s Legal Treasures: The State Library’s Collections is slated for 10:30 a.m. EDT. Registration for the seminar is open at the GSNJ website.

• Sunday, 5 June, 2 p.m. EDT: The Athens-Clarke Public Library, Athens, Georgia, is hosting the virtual presentation From 1619 to Juneteenth – Slavery and the Law Before the Civil War. Registration for the presentation is open at the library website.

• Saturday, 11 June, 10:30 a.m. EDT: The Massachusetts Society of Genealogists-Middlesex Chapter is hosting the virtual presentation In the Poor House: Legal Record of Debt. Details will be available soon at the MSOG-Middlesex website.

• Monday-Friday, June 20-24: The June session of the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh kicks off the summer institute season with its first nine courses. Rick Sayre and I will be co-coordinating our sold-out course, Law School for Genealogists, and I’ll also be lecturing in Gena Philibert-Ortega’s new course, Beyond a Name and Date: Advanced Practices in Social History. If you act fast, you may just be able to snag a seat in Gena’s course or, perhaps, in Following Ancestors in Time and Place, coordinated by Cari A. Taplin, or in Irish Genealogical Research, Part II, coordinated by David Rencher. See the GRIP website for details.

• Tuesday, 21 June, 7 p.m. EDT: The Cape Cod Genealogical Society is hosting the virtual presentation NARA MythBusters: Your Family IS in the Archives. Details will be available soon at the society website.

Come on out and join us, virtually or (gasp!) in-person even, for one or more of these events and note, in many cases, that registration will be free or at a reduced cost to members of the host society — and some are limited to members only… There are some reaaaaaaally good reasons for joining genealogical societies… Just sayin’…
